Obama and Biden in Kokomo

We certainly had some excitement in our neck of the woods in the past couple of days. Both President Obama and Vice President Biden spent a few hours in Kokomo. They had lunch with our local fire fighters at the Kokomo downtown station. Their purpose in coming to Kokomo was to give credence to the claim that Kokomo is a town that the stimulus saved. This related mostly to the jobs at our largest employer, the Chrysler Corporation.

This visit and Thanksgiving has caused me to do some thinking. It occurs to me that we, all of us, spend way too much time in vitriolic exchange. A lot of this is fueled by the likes of Rush Limbaugh. I am thinking that we would be much better served if we stopped the anger and character assassination, acted like civilized folks who care for all US citizens, and get on with our disagreements while working toward ways to move this country forward. Yes, we have serious and deep disagreement over policies. The folks with the most political power will push for their agenda as one would expect. The way to change is to garner the needed political power, not call names.

I have listened to Rush Limbaugh about as much as I can stand at this point. In my opinion, he is toxic. He is not serving the good of the country or the Republican Party. Time to dump Rush. Again, we need to treat each other with kindness and respect and disagree in civilized ways, not Limbaugh ways.

About Kent Blacklidge Ph.D.

As part of a newspaper family who owned a 34,000 daily newspaper in the heart of the Midwest, I have a passion for a strong “Fourth Estate”, the press. Without a diligent and assertive free press, the power would be taken from the people. People have the absolute right to know. After earning a degree in Industrial Management from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue, I spent over 20 years in newspaper management with several as publisher. I am also holder of three graduate science degrees including a Ph.D.. I have a passionate interest in science and the environment. I have little tolerance for ignorance and stupidity.
